Infographic/Slipp - Difference between the life of university students by each grade

Our team's topic is to find the difference between the life of Hanyang university students by each grade. In this infographic, we used several images which represents well the life style of each grade. We divided this slide into 4 grades and arranged appropriate sentences to each square. And also added 4 images for each grade. The images are what we predicted about their life style or attitude like images of preparation for job interview, study, graduation thesis for 4 graders. Our team interviewed students about what they would do at certain situation. If you wonder about the results, come to watch our video!

Documentary about university student's different lifestyle(or reactions) by each grade

In Korea, most of high school student in 1st ,2nd,3rd  grade have almost same life pattern. However university students are not same as high school students in life pattern. We thought that the life patterns of university students are different by their grades. I was drinking and playing all days when I was 1st grade and now I am studying much harder than when I was young. I also think that grade level means (to students) how they should act or some kind of obligation or something determines dos and don’ts. Our team members will interview students in different grade in Hanyang university. Each member will interview each student by grades. I will interview 3rd graders and make infographic (after the video is edited roughly) which can well represent what our project is about. We made four questions which is directly related to student’s life patterns. The four questions are asking students what they would do at certain situation. We expect that our guess is right.

Long overtime work of Korean workers

Audience / Academic or Non-academic:

People who plan to get a job after graduation or who currently have a job.

Non academic

Purpose:  To explain that overtime work decrease productivity and quality of life.

In Korea, people traditionally regarded night overtime as a criterion of diligence. Workers tried to attract their boss’s attention through night time work. There was usually no ‘Dinner or weekend with family’

It has been found that the work-life balance of the Korean people is the lowest level in the OECD In 2012, each waged Korean employee worked for 2,092 hours, which was 420 hours more than the OECD average. The numbers were 1,765 for Japanese workers, and 1,334 for the Dutch. Meanwhile, the labor productivity per working hour was US$30.4 as of the end of 2012, whereas the OCED average was US$ 47.00

Labor productivity of OECD counturies
(measured in Korea)

There were some good points of long time work. It used to hold the company members together and make them feel a sense of belonging. Apart from the matter of productivity, the work culture of Korea contributed to deeper unity of organization, which played a big part in the fast development in 1970-80s.

But the bad points are much more than those.

First, despite their long work time, the productivity has been low. The overtime work is usually not for the contribution for company but for their bosses. As they regard night overtime work as natural, they feel no need to work diligently during the official work time. That is the reason why productivity is low.

Second, as the fatigue is accumulated, they become less motivated and hard to search for more creative ways. So they are apt to the same methods as before which makes no progress. Working overtime is unsustainable only in very short term. And working a lot of overtime creates a level of burnout that sets in far sooner and is far more acute and requires much more to fix than most bosses think it does.

As this graph shows,
as long work time continues
for many weeks,
the productivity is declining.

This video is telling that working more hours doesn't always mean producing more

Third, Relation with family is worsening because they have less time to spend with them. The lack of conversation and unconcern for family because of work can cause family discord.

Fourth, it becomes hard to maintain work life balance. Everyone needs to keep the balance because that is closely related to the quality of life and happiness. Valuable things such as spending time with family and friends, doing self development or having meaningful     conversation are need as human being. As Korean workers cannot keep the balance, they have one of the lowest degrees of happiness in OECD countries.

I think that Korea should change its ‘success formula’ which is overtime work for boss’s attention. Because fixed closing hour can raise the degree of concentration during work time and organization competitive power. And that will bring much change into the way of living of people.
Almost every work place of Korea has too much drinking parties, it is not helpful for work or even relationship between members because there are usually no honest talks.

For the increase of productivity and creative ideas for the future of companies,
managers need to give workers enough time between work sessions.
Getting enough rest  will make them better focus on their work.

Second, What I want to emphasize is that the purpose of people’s working is not working itself. Workers and young applicants need to reconsider the ultimate objective of life.

In this video I prepared, a man says “If I start sacrificing my family, I start being less human. I start being less of the person God called me to be. And I believe I bring less of  my real self to my role.(~) That responsibility of holding onto my family has the place where I’m really known for being who I am and being myself there ”

Koreans were proud of their diligence which lead to the high speed growth but now they are agonize over the way to happiness. Many 1970, 80 generation people who had less conversation with their child, are now confused of about their identity and role.

So I think we had better do reconsider our way of working and living.

Infographic - Difference between men and women

We used some images which represents differences between men and women. To compare them, we set 4 separated images for each gender. Each gender behaves differently in same situations. What we tried to express by this inforgraphic is that women are more sensitive and complex than men. They are naturally apt to regard small things as big ones if the things are involved in their lifestyle but men's are not that much. We used two colors, pink color for women and blue color for men to represent the difference. I set up a link to a writing for more information for readers.

Inform and express - Recommend a small house

Recently, I found an interesting book which is about house. The name of that book is <Recommend a small house>. This book tells us why living in a small house worthwhile.

I think Koreans are abnormally obsessed with house. They usually get loans to live in a bigger house when they take a job and work for repayment for their lifetime. Work becomes nothing but just means for money. People dreams of a large house with dress room and each rooms for children and many bathrooms and wide living room… and so on. Japanese are not much different from Korean. People want more big furniture and household goods.

But do you agree with the idea that these big things ensure a good life? Of course they can provide convenience. We can put many clothes in big closet and many foods in refrigerator. But I think people are forgetting why they possess things and they are possessing to possess.

This book, <Recommend a small house> suggests us ‘A minus philosophy’. If we define ‘A plus philosophy’ as a possessive idea, ’a minus philosophy’ is an idea back to the essentials.
It starts with a simple question. “What is house?” We need house to protect us from cold and heat and to have independent place from outside. A bedroom has only to make us sleep well and other places also have only to maintain their essential functions.  The writer of this book tells us that we are able to find happiness from the essentials, escaping from possessiveness.

Every house in this book is very small. Readers may think that it is impossible to live in those places. But everything we need in our lives is equipped. <Recommend a small house> is not a guide book to build small house, it is a philosophy book about our lives. The writer says “living with what we really love is the most luxurious life”

This video is about an american tiny house I found
in Youtube.  If you are planning to move in other house or buy new one, I hope you read this book before.

Moon river

I hope to introduce one of my favorite songs, Moon river.

It was an original song of the 1961 movie Breakfast at Tiffany's.
In the movie,  Audrey Hepburn sang this song on her guitar.

It won the 1962 Grammy Award for Record of the Year and Mercer the Grammy Award for Song of the Year. After this song had a huge hit and was nominated, Andy williams who was supposed to sing this song at the presentation ceremony recorded it quickly and made an album at the same day as the ceremony which also made a hit. After that, it had been recorded by famous singers like Jerry Butler, Louis Armstrong, Pierino Ronald Como, Frank Sinatra Judy Garland.

This is the lyric of  Moon river

Moon river, wider than a mile
I'm crossing’ you in style some day
Oh, dream maker. you heart breaker
wherever you’re going’I’m going your way

Two drifters, off to see the world
There’s such a lot of world to see
We’re after the same rainbow’s end
Waiting ’round the band my Huckleberry friend Moon river and me

This is Audrey Hepburn singing Moon river in Breakfast at Tiffany's.

Holy(Audrey Hepburn) is living in an apartment in New york, dreaming to be upwardly mobile by hanging out with rich men. One day Paul(George Peppard) move in the same apartment of Holy and they come to know each other. Paul is mesmerized by her free spirit but Holy yearns for the upper class, escaping from poor reality.

This movie depicts their same and different values and the ways of life with some episodes.
From the beginning of the film, the differently arranged ‘Moon river’s keep flowing fitted into the atmosphere.

This is Andy Williams’. Very classic.

This is Frank Sinatra's.
He is well known for his song, My way.

There is an interesting episode when the title ‘Moon river’ was made. After the writer Mancini made this song, he went to see John Herndon Mercer to ask him to write a lyric for the song.
Mercer was pleased with the song and wrote the lyric.
When they were making a title, June river , Blue river, Red river were considered
but Moon river was finally selected.

This is bugge weseltoft’s Moon river piano play which I like the most.
The previous ‘Moon river’s were light and romantic but this play has deep and blue emotion.

This is Naomi & Goro’s Moon river. This singer has a pure and transparent voice.
I think this voice is well fitted to the mood of Moon river.

There are hundreds of other Moon rivers that you can find on the internet
I hope you find your Moon river.
